Emma - Switzerland
Taking part in this exchange and choosing to go to Switzerland was one of the best decisions of my life. Not only did the activities exceed my expectations but the bonds I have made for life with my Swiss host family in Zurich and my friends at the camp. Some of which are from Brazil, Slovakia, Moldova and the USA!!
With my host family, activities included: a boat day on Lake Zurich with paddle boarding, visiting the Lindt chocolate factory, and a trip to the Swiss countryside of Thurgau. On the weekend, we took a trip up to their house in the mountains where we hiked, had fondue, and enjoyed each other's company all with stunning views of the mountains. My host sister took me to all her favourite spots in Zurich and I explored the old town of Zurich and the more modern parts. All the food I had was also very delicious. We also attended the Gurtenfestival in Bern where I watched artists like Stormzy, Jungle and BurnaBoy perform. It was truly an unforgettable experience. My host sister is even planning to come visit England next year!
At the camp in Bern, my activities varied even more: we went to a cheese factory and the Cailler chocolate factory in a French part of Switzerland, had a tour of the city of Bern, visited the Swatch and Omega watch factory, went river rafting on the Aare river that travels through all of Bern. In the second week, we then had the choice to either go to Lausanne or hike in the Bernese mountains for 3 days, I chose the mountains and we climbed 1000 metres in only the first day! The views were jaw-dropping and I am so proud of myself for completing it as I have never been that high above sea level before (2600m). I also loved we were given free time in the camp as it gave us a chance to explore the city of Bern on our own, swim in the Aare river and bond together as a group. I have now made friends for life and am planning a trip to Slovakia next year !
If you choose to go to Switzerland be prepared to experience amazing architecture that varies from region to region, incredible mountain views, the generosity of the Swiss people and creating unforgettable memories within a unique culture!
I can't wait to apply again next year!
